Why understanding comes first

Most maths tools start with recall and hope understanding follows. A child who can't remember 7×8 is shown the answer, told to memorise it, and moved on. If they forget it tomorrow, which they will, because the answer has no meaning to them, they're shown it again. This cycle, repeated hundreds of times, produces two outcomes: modest improvement for facts already partially known, and deepening anxiety about facts that aren't.

We flipped the order. Understanding first, always. Every concept starts with meaning, visual models, real-world contexts, story problems, so children know why before they're ever asked to recall. Once the understanding is there, recall practice is faster, more reliable, and lasts for years rather than weeks.

The same gentle path applies across every maths topic in the XMaths Champions family. Whether your child is learning times tables, fractions, time or shapes, the approach is the same: understand first, apply next, play last. No timers. No pressure. No child written off.

Three stages. One gentle path.

Every topic has its own gentle step programme

Each maths topic, times tables, fractions, time, money, shapes, measurement and numbers, has its own carefully written, step-by-step learning programme. Gentle, visual, and built around the same understanding-first philosophy. No timers, no pressure, no child rushed. Every concept is broken down into small, manageable steps that build understanding before recall is ever asked.
